Press Release by DPRK Mission to UN Office and Int'l Organizations in Vienna

Pyongyang, August 5 (KCNA) -- The DPRK permanent mission to the UN Office and international organizations in Vienna issued the following press release on August 4:

At the first session of the preparatory committee for the 11th NPT review conference, the U.S. and its vassal forces unreasonably criticized the DPRK's nuclear deterrent for self-defense as a "threat" to the international peace and security and the nuclear non-proliferation system. In this regard, the DPRK permanent mission to the UN Office and international organizations in Vienna makes public the following press release:

As for threat to the international peace and security and the nuclear non-proliferation system, it has come evidently from the U.S. at present.

The U.S. openly declared it as a state policy to highly modernize the nuclear weapon industry and rapidly upgrade the three nuclear strategic assets and has spent astronomical military expenditure on it every year. And it has deliberately refused to implement New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) that may be regarded as the last fortress of the Nuclear Disarmament Treaty.

Unilaterally prioritizing the narrow security interests of it and its allies, the U.S. is also pushing ahead with nuclear proliferation to Australia under the signboard of the AUKUS alliance. Some days ago, it started the operation of the U.S.-south Korea "Nuclear Consultative Group" simulating the use of nukes against the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and deployed a nuclear submarine loaded with strategic nuclear weapons in the Korean peninsula for the first time in 42 years, thus escalating the military tension in the region to the eve of the outbreak of a nuclear war.

The DPRK's bolstering of nuclear deterrent for self-defense is a just exercise of its sovereignty to prevent the outbreak of a nuclear war, defend the national sovereignty and territorial integrity and control and manage the situation of the Korean peninsula in a stable way, under the unstable security environment in the region caused by such nuclear threat from the U.S. and its allied forces.

This being a hard reality, the U.S. let even its satellite countries go so far as to seriously distort the reality, doggedly pulling up the DPRK over its measures for bolstered self-defensive military capabilities. This is a political provocation to cover up its true colors as a criminal state which used nukes and to evade the international community's criticism over its non-compliance with nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation treaties.

The DPRK is a responsible nuclear weapons state which committed itself to the ban on nuclear use and threat to non-nuclear states and to the nuclear non-proliferation. Its nuclear force will never be a threat to those countries respecting its sovereignty and security interests.

Its stand on the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) is clear.

Signatories to the NPT should not take issue with the DPRK over its legitimate exercise of sovereignty, as it had legally withdrawn from the NPT 20 years ago according to the right of a signatory specified in the treaty, but concentrate efforts on finding solutions to the major challenges facing the treaty.

And the U.S., the world's biggest nuclear weapons state and the world's first nuclear user, should halt at once the criminal acts of systematically violating and wrecking the international disarmament system while threatening and blackmailing sovereign states by deploying its nuclear strategic assets in different parts of the world.

It should immediately stop the moves for "sharing nuclear" and "beefing up extended deterrence" with non-nuclear states that undermine the basis of the international nuclear non-proliferation system and trigger off nuclear arms race in the world and the region.

The international community should raise the voices of denunciation against the U.S. dangerous threat of nuclear use and illegal acts like the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the root cause of instability and confrontation, and immediately take practical measures for ensuring global peace and security.

Press Statement by Director General of Department of Chinese Affairs of DPRK Foreign Ministry

Pyongyang, August 4 (KCNA) -- Maeng Yong Rim, director general of the Department of Chinese Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of the DPRK, issued the following press statement on August 3:

Recently, the U.S. made public "Weapons Aid Package" for providing Taiwan with weapons worth 345 million U.S. dollars, thus driving the military tensions in the Asia-Pacific region to another ignition point of war.

In less than three years since the present U.S. administration came into power, it provided military aid to Taiwan as times as the preceding administration had done.

The U.S. is planning to provide Taiwan with military aid worth 10 billion U.S. dollars for the coming five years and emergency defense aid worth a billion U.S. dollars every year.

This constitutes a flagrant violation of the one China principle, which the U.S. committed itself before the Chinese government and people, and of the spirit of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. It is also an interference in internal affairs of China and a grave encroachment on China's sovereignty and security.

The U.S. says in public that it abides by the principle of one China but instigates in the rear the "independence" of Taiwan, inseparable part of China. Such shameless duality and double-dealing of the U.S. are a dangerous political and military provocation totally destroying the stability of the regional situation and an anti-peace reckless act which must be condemned by the world people.

It is very natural that the Chinese government and army clearly reiterated their stand resolutely opposing the U.S. provision of weapons to Taiwan island and scathingly censured that such acts are making Taiwan a "powder keg" and "ammunition depot" and driving the situation in the Taiwan Strait to the brink of war.

While talking about the improvement of relations with China, the present U.S. administration is clinging to the Taiwan issue, the most important core interests of China. Its intention is clear.

It is the sinister intention of the U.S. to turn Taiwan into an unsinkable advanced base against China and the first-line trench for carrying out its strategy for deterring China and thus secure its hegemonic position in the Asia-Pacific region.

But the U.S. ambition for hegemony can never work on the strength of the powerful Chinese people.

What the "Taiwanese independence" separatist forces have gotten from the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan is nothing but to turn its island into a U.S. huge old weapon exhibition and a heap of scrap iron.

If the U.S. persists in dangerous acts of provoking the core interests of China while repeatedly violating the red line set by China in the Taiwan issue, it will surely have to pay a high price for them.

The Asia-Pacific region including the Korean peninsula and the Taiwan Strait is neither a theatre of the U.S. military activity nor a test site of war.

Independent and sovereign states in the Asia-Pacific region have the strength and will to firmly defend their sovereignty and core interests from the U.S. high-handed and arbitrary practices.

We brand the U.S. moves to instigate the "Taiwanese independence" separatist forces as a wanton interference in the internal affairs of China and a grave encroachment upon its sovereignty and strongly denounce and reject them.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea will fully support any measure of the People's Republic of China to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and achieve the sacred cause of the unification of the Chinese nation.

Successful Educator

Saemaul Junior Middle School in Phyongchon District, Pyongyang, is renowned for bringing up young talented rhythmic gymnasts.

This is associated with the devotion of Pak Hyang Suk, Merited Teacher, who has devoted her all to bringing up the reserves over the past 45 years.

Seeing her in childhood, a resemblance to her mother who was an actress at an art troupe, her teachers and friends thought that she would become a singer.

But, she dreamed of becoming a teacher, realizing the beautiful hopes of children.

After graduating from a college specializing in rhythmic gymnastics, she became a teacher.

She, disliking to be a loser and going to bed after doing what she had planned, suggested organizing a rhythmic gymnastics group as other schools produced promising football and table tennis players.

Her school actively supported her suggestion.

She became an instructor of the group, and had a training hall, equipped with ring, skipping rope and bludgeon and other necessary materials for training, laid out amid interests and expectations of other teachers and students and their parents.

She had a great ambition, but it was easier said than done.

Sometimes, she felt tired and feeble-minded during teaching young students, who were strangers to rhythmic gymnastics, but she did not give up.

She made efforts to hone her technical movements of high levels, and devoted her everything for studying scientific training guidance methods by reading related reference books.

In instructing the students in training, she put much effort on making students finding clear movement lines of the equipment and sense of them by clear technical moving, keeping good balance and systematic basic training using equipment.

One year later, members of her group participated in the competition in the city for the first time.

Compared to the students from other schools, they were just beginners, but they took the first place in the competition and sixth place in the national competition.

Everyone was satisfied with this result, except Hyang Suk.

She redoubled her efforts, analysing the merits and demerits she had found in the competition.

She visited experts for their help to complete the difficult and complicated movements of her group members, and would perfect herself new rhythmic movement until next morning.

Thanks to her devotion, the group took the third place in the national competition next year and the first place one year later.

Since then, the group won the first place 32 times and 12 rotating trophies.

During those years, people have lavished unstinted praise on her, calling her a “teacher born for rhythmic gymnastics,” a “fervent enthusiast,” a “persistent woman” and an “invincible opponent.”

To the people, who ask her about the key to the successive victories, she says:

“They say winning and maintaining honour are both difficult. I feel the same in every match. If I have to talk about the key, a better plan flashes across my mind’s eye, an ambition to present a better work, at the time of feeling the joy of victory.”

The state put her forward as a meritorious person of socialist patriotism.

Outburst of Thanks

Almost every day people move to new houses in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The people in the Taephyong area in the capital city of Pyongyang and other areas were given new houses. They shed tears of gratitude for the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the government on giving priority to providing the people with new modern houses free of charge by building them in different parts of the country even under the difficult situation.

Young Taekwon-Do Practitioners

The children of the Taekwon-Do group at the Mangyongdae Schoolchildren's Palace put heart and soul to training.

Instructor Kim Yong Sun, People’s Athlete, often takes the children to the picturesque Moran Hill to train them. In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the homeland of Taekwon-Do, all the people, old and young, men and women, practise the orthodox martial art of the Korean nation.
