production of custom-built equipment.
At the Hungnam Fertilizer Complex and
the February 8 Vinalon Complex, he stressed the need to put the production of
fertilizer and basic chemical products on a normal basis by taking proper
measures for supplying raw materials and fuel. He also underlined the need to
step up the construction of a base of producing slow effective fertilizer, and
to further intensify the research on the fields of the application of melamine
resin, which plays an important role in the development of the chemical
industry, and thus to make a substantial contribution to agricultural
production and the improvement of the people's standard of living.
Learning about the first-stage
construction of the Tanchon Power Station, the premier called for accelerating
full preparations for its inauguration, including the test run of electricity-generating
equipment, and for paying deep attention to ensuring the working and living
conditions of the builders.
At the Sangnong Mine, he underscored the
need to give definite precedence to the capital tunneling and reinforce the
transport system in order to mine more ore. And he also stressed that the
smelting process should be further perfected.
At the Hamhung Wheat Processing Factory,
he said that it should expand its wheat-processing capacity so as to provide
the regional-industry factories with quality wheat flour.
Going round the refractory shop and
other places of the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex, the premier emphasized
the need to improve the performance of the furnace by taking technical measures
to decisively improve the quality of fireproof materials, and he stressed the
importance of increasing the operation rate of equipment in order to
unconditionally attain the goal of iron and steel production set forth by the
Party.
At the Musan Mining Complex, he called
on it to push ahead with the work to expand the capacity of the production of
concentrated iron ore, including big blasting, in a planned way, and to
accelerate the growth in production of the big base of the metallurgical
industry by utilizing the existing production foundations.
The field consultative meetings
underlined the need for officials to thoroughly establish the working style of
pushing ahead with the development of their units with science and technology
as a lifeline, and discussed the issue of scrupulously organizing alternated

Biodiversity Protection Brisk in DPRK
Pyongyang, May 22 (KCNA) -- May 22 is
the International Day for Biological Diversity.
As a signatory to the Convention on
Biological Diversity, the DPRK is striving to protect and make sustainable use
of biodiversity.
It has planned medium- and long-term
projects for biodiversity protection and conducted activities based on them.
Through the national medium- and
long-term green plans, it is working out and implementing the work for
rationally combining biodiversity protection with sustainable economic
development.
As scientific research into
comprehensive harmful insect extermination technology has been intensified and
national measures were taken, the work for preserving ecological environment
and ensuring agricultural development and clean urban environment are being
stepped up.
Meanwhile, it has pushed ahead with the
work to regularly identify and conserve the species of animals and plants and their
inhabitation conditions.
On the basis of confirming the priority
regions of biodiversity, it has set up sanctuaries in the regions with rich
biodiversity and selected rational ecological channels connecting major
sanctuaries, thus actively conserving the species of animals and plants in the
country.
It scientifically evaluates and analyzes
the effects of gigantic nature-remaking project, including forest restoration
and tideland reclamation, on biodiversity and takes sci-tech measures for its
protection.
The seasonal and annual number of
water-birds is being comprehensively estimated in wetlands and major migratory
bird reserves on the east and west coasts of the DPRK.
Relevant scientific research units are
pushing ahead with the work to update the lists of species and endangered
species, thus laying a scientific foundation for protecting the biological
resources of the country.
